A Quick Clarification of Feelings and Gut-reactions

I feel like I need to explain something about myself, because I’ve only recently begun to realize that people don’t think the same way I do. Surprise! Okay, I’m kind of kidding, because I do know that people think differently, but I didn’t realize they didn’t understand my way of thinking, and at the risk of sounding self-centered, I want to explain.

If you’ve known me for awhile or if we’ve had extended one-on-one conversations, you probably know some of my weaknesses. You have probably seen at least part of my struggles, and you probably know some of the doubts I wrestle with. That’s because I usually give out that information without hesitation, especially if you have showed a bit of your own vulnerability to me. But I realize some people might be confused as to why I so readily share those things. Here’s why–because I am encouraged when others share their own vulnerability, the good, the bad, and the ugly.

This will sound mean for a moment, but when I hear that others are struggling with the same things I do or in the same ways I struggle, my first thoughts are thoughts of encouragement (to myself, I mean.) I think things like, “I’m not alone.” “Other’s have been here too.” “This problem is defeat-able.” “We can do this together.” That is why when someone shows a piece of their heart to me, my gut reaction is to show a piece of my heart to them, and show the same struggle in my own life. I will say (or at least think) things like, “Yes, I’ve struggled along those lines.” “That happened to me too at this time and that time.” “I deal with this too.”

What I’m realizing is that this doesn’t always come across as an encouragement. It either comes across as 1) trying to one-up their pain with my own pain or 2) giving them an excuse not to deal with it. That’s not it at all! My pain is no more important than your own, and even though some trials seem so much larger than others, I know that while you’re in them–they are all painful! What might be a small deal for one person, is huge for another, so to each his own. Also, if you are dealing with sin, there is no excuse to let it sit and fester. I only want to be there to help you.

Before I close, I do also acknowledge that my feelings above are not always the case. Sometimes I am in a bout of self-pity, I am too self-centered, and I talk before I listen. That aside, I only want to understand and be understood.

I suppose all I would like to say is that I really do care, I want to fight with you, and I’m sorry if I’ve ever hurt you by talking about myself instead of letting you talk about yourself.

Sunflower Blogger Award

From Leah Bo-beah!

You know how the drill goes.

I give 11 facts about myself.

1.  When I was around 6 years old, my siblings gave me the nickname Sunflower.

2.  Right now I’m wearing a polka dot dress.

3.  I hope to get a job at the library someday.

4.  I can still do a “front handspring” sort of.

5.  I always cut my own hair.

6.  I’m not sure what else to say

7.  So I’ll just find something random, k?

8.  My favorite sections at the library are: writing, animals, drawing, and comics.

9.  I share two little black flip-phones with my siblings.

10.  And in public I like to show them off

11.  Jordan from Blimey Cow uses a flip-phone too. ;D

Okay, those were pretty bad. But moving on. Leah gave me some questions….

1.  Where is your most favorite place to be in the whole wide world? I have a few of those. One is my church building, but what makes it special are all the people there. I can’t say it is without beauty when everyone is gone, because it’s one place I can play piano to a large room, and it sounds like holiness itself. Another favorite place is down in the country at my grandparents’ place. It’s just full of memories, and it feels like a second home. And then I really enjoy Silver Birch Ranch, where our family has attended homeschool retreats. The scenery, the smells, the people, I don’t know. It’s just magical somehow.

2.  Early riser or night owl? Usually a night owl, but it depends on the season and the day and my plans for the day. In the summer it is easier to rise early and spend the morning outside with the cat, but also during November I’m up early. 🙂

3.  If you were to talk about a subject for an hour straight what would you pick? Eh, it depends on the person I’m having the conversation with. But if I have to talk about it for an hour, it’d better be something good. Perhaps what God has been doing in our lives and the lives of the people around us. It would be that or books, stories, and writing. 🙂

4.  What has God been teaching you this week? Well, that’s what the blog posts on my blog are about, everything God has been showing me. So you can go read them.

5.  If you were to create the “perfect atmosphere”, what would it be? There are probably several. But let me see: people I love. Things I love. Scenery I love. And all around love. How’s that?

6.  Last book you read. Ummm, the last book I completed was Pentecost-Today?

7.  And what personality do you jive best with? I don’t really know! But a few characteristics that I really like and respond to are: humility and graciousness to take what people say seriously, humor, responsiveness, and eye contact. I couldn’t really choose a personality that I go with. I have yet to find a personality I can’t get along with. 🙂

I will tag Haley and Payton now, just because I think they deserve a Sunflower Award. But I have no questions to ask, so just give us 11 random facts, or answer Leah’s questions. 🙂

CHEF conference–just a truck load of pictures

This past weekend, May 8th through May 11th, I was at the Christian Home Educators Fellowship conference, and I cannot say enough good things about it.

I was guided in reevaluating my life and how productive I am being in my family. (Answer: not very productive–yet!) The talks, lectures, sermons, messages, workshops, it was all amazing! And not only that, I got to reunite with long unseen friends and meet several new ones, many of whom I have heard much about but never met before.

My dear friend Meghan took a lot of pictures of the short times I got to spend with my friends throughout the four days.

These are the two friends I was most excited about seeing, Leah and Meghan. Leah I had not seen in almost two years and it was the first time Leah, Meghan, and myself were all together.

And you will probably see a lot of pictures of Leah. 😀IMG_9920

Jessica, Milly, Bekah, Leah, and myself. Don’t ask me why I look so much taller….

And that’s us goofing off. Leah is so funny!

See! I told you!IMG_9915

“Do you like my naturally curly hair?”

Claire, Meghan, and Catherine

I’ve seen Mathew in way more pictures than in real life, but his pictures always crack me up.

IMG_9961Same with this guy, he cracks me up too. I’m gonna pretend like I don’t know his name. 😉

On the second day of the conference we all wore black and white and we played around the big ol’ fountain.

IMG_9978 IMG_9996

And we stuck flowers in each other’s hairIMG_0022IMG_9995

Gennie and Ruff just watched us

It seemed like a good idea to run around the fountain

And to run after Milly

Baby girl also ran around the fountain! She was my pleasant and ever-welcome shadow and she was infatuated with the escalators. We are homeschooled, after all….XD

On the last day I felt a tremendous urge to get wet, more than dipping my feet in the water like I had a few times. I decided poor little Thea on a wheelchair must be thinking the same thing and I flicked a bit of water on her. And hour later our little showers were still going back and forth. In an attempt to end it all I sent a small tsunami (no, not really) at Thea. (Leah and Michael got wet too, but I did tell them to lean forward.) Thea’s ankle was broken, so she couldn’t follow me, (mwahaha) but when I was running around the fountain again and great gusty hurricane got me for her. The wind blew, the water flew and totally soaked my left side. My legs were numb because it was so cold and I had to sit through the next session all wet–but it curbed my desire to play in the fountain and I’d hug the mad fountain if I could. IMG_0026

Beautiful Leah….IMG_0012

Simply beautiful!

Just like her sister.IMG_0015

And this is how I look when I’ve been sitting down too long and finally get to run around.

Crazy as I was, I think you could safely say Billy was a bit more so. I must admit I was pressing him to do it, but he rode his unicycle around the lip of the fountain and didn’t fall in. We did get the hotel security on us, but not before the video was taken with evidence that he did it!

Again, don’t ask why I look so much taller than everyone….but you can guess.

For those worried about Alexa! She’s right there in the middle and perfectly safe….and she didn’t go to Canada….*blinks and shakes head* So confusing….IMG_0173

“I love you!”

I’ve heard bunches about this family! I finally got to meet them and their bro….

Michael who has his own blog, young-christian-artist.blogspot.com

Speaking of blogs, Leah’s is at optimisticworldview.blogspot.com.

I think Meghan liked taking portraits around the fountain.

Matching redheads! Meghan and Lizzy

And Wy-*ahem* Leah’s brother.

She’s probably saying, “Seriously?” To quote Jeremy, “It’s so much fun to tease Leah.”

IMG_0305“Yay! Let’s go tease Leah!”

Makes me wonder if they are laughing at Leah in this picture.

Drink the melted whipped cream, or not drink the melted whipped cream? I gave it to Jimmy; little boys will drink anything that’s too sweet.

When the time came to say goodbye I simply had to tell myself that I finally got to see her and would hopefully see her before another two years. Otherwise, I probably would have cried. And if you haven’t guessed by now, yes, I’m that much taller than Leah. (And it looks like I’m hugging a ball full of hair. She is under there and pretending to cry.)

Easter, what the boys did

They videoed themselves with the phone and Billy edited it. Gotta tell you! They are talented! All three can ride unicycles! How many people can say that three of their brothers ride unicycles? Ride unicycles, spin diabolos, do handstands, ninja rolls, play any sport, contra dance, carry kids….pretty soon they’ll be doing it all at once!

This, my friends, is what happens when you’re homeschooled and when videogames and TV have been outlawed from the house–insane fun!

From the family of the Increda-Jacksons

Electric Bubbles

I’m just gonna swash all the lastest updates in one paragraph. I miss my starry night background, so sorry everyone who complained, but it’s up again and more beautiful than ever! Zoom up if you need to. The Hobbit was released, I missed it. The world was supposed to end, but I missed that too. We had our Taste and Send bakeoff yesterday, 1600+ treats made. Christmas is approaching and I’m looking forward to visiting with family in just a few days. I think I sort of re-injured my ankle last night while sitting on the floor absorbed in a book. I just twisted it, it make a loud complaint, and started hurting some. I’m reading Flight from Stonewycke by Michael Phillips and Judith Pella. I really like these books and I can’t get away from them. I started drawing the other day, but it wasn’t good enough to do anything with. For awhile I was drawing a bunch of characters from Nanowrimo people. That grew old, sadly. It was fun while it lasted. We hosted a dance! It was very fun. We had to drop a few dances to keep it short enough though, and they dropped one of my favorites. At the end I played a waltz on my tin whistle and sang a verse of the song with my brother. The song was an old Scottish song, Wild Mountain Thyme. Very pretty. Friday was the deadline for all the funds for the Mission Trip. I haven’t heard the result. We are still collecting funds for construction that the church building needs.

So that’s about it.
